How Many Americans think weed should be illegal?

Ever since the perception towards marijuana began to shift, cannabis legalization has been a hot topic in the US. On one hand, we have seen a significant surge in the number of states relaxing their marijuana laws, allowing its consumption for either medical or recreational purposes, or both. On the other hand, there are still states where marijuana remains illegal in all forms.

Shocking number of Americans think weed should be illegal

Based on research by the Pew Research Center, most Americans are now open to some form of marijuana legalization. The survey, which involved around 10,000 Americans, revealed that six out of ten adult respondents are in favour of legalizing marijuana for both medical patients and adult use. Only 11% believed that marijuana should remain illegal in all forms [^1^].

Where in the US is Weed Still Illegal?

While marijuana laws have eased in many states, there are still several states where it is illegal. As of now, marijuana remains completely illegal in Idaho, Wyoming, Kansas, Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina. In these states, the use, sale, or possession of marijuana in any form is prohibited and could result in criminal charges. These states represent a shrinking holdout against the wave of marijuana acceptance sweeping the nation.

The Gateway Drug Debate

The survey also highlighted the stark divide in opinion about whether marijuana is a “gateway” drug. While almost half of the respondents under 30 believed that legalization decreases the use of other drugs, 39% of seniors believe legal marijuana leads to increased use of heavier substances like fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin [^1^].

Final Thoughts

The tides are undoubtedly turning in weed approval, with more and more states adopting relaxed marijuana laws. However, it’s crucial to remain aware of the current laws in your state and to use marijuana responsibly if it is legal. The journey to nationwide marijuana legalization is still ongoing, and it’s an issue that will continue to shape political, social, and economic discussions in the years to come.
